Accessibility
Everyone should be able to read, hear, and use these alerts, including people who use a screen reader, a magnifier, voice control, or a keyboard instead of a touch screen.
What This Site Does
- Large, plain text in a typeface made for people with low vision. Pages can be enlarged to twice their size without losing anything.
- A Read Aloud button on every alert, using the voice built into your phone or computer.
- Every alert says in words how urgent it is and whether it has ended or been canceled. Color is never the only signal.
- Works with a keyboard alone, with screen readers, in dark mode, and in high-contrast modes.
- Alerts in more than one language, and a printable list of the day's alerts.
The Standard We Follow
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. Each new version is checked with automated tools, by keyboard, in high-contrast mode, and on small screens. We have not yet tested every page with people who use screen readers every day, and we would like to.
Known Limits
- Translations made automatically can read awkwardly until a team member who speaks the language checks them. Those are marked on the alert.
- Read Aloud can only use the voices installed on your phone or computer.
- Maps and some links lead to other websites, which we do not control.
